NOTE! Lecture held in Swedish

Together with architect Enar Nordvik, we welcome you to a double lecture focusing on the community of Boliden, its architect, and the garden city.

John Åkerlund - The Architect Who Shaped Boliden
John Åkerlund started as an electrical engineer from Borås, he later became known as an architect with a breadth of work ranging from church interiors to schools and entire industrial communities. He also served as the architect for Boliden Company during the construction of the brand-new community of Boliden.

Karin Eriksson Hultén, an art historian and architect, will discuss John Åkerlund's life and extensive body of work based on her research and dissertation "Traveling in Architecture: John Åkerlund's Life and Work" (Umeå University, 2004).

The Role of Gardens in a Society - Boliden in a Sub-Study
A sub-study examines the first phase of the mining community Boliden and the significance of gardens in its development.

Elin Bergman, a doctoral student in art history, will speak based on her dissertation "The Texture of the Garden: Spatial, Material, and Social Perspectives on Private Gardens in Sweden 1900-1930". She will explore the importance and use of gardens in urban planning, aesthetic and political discourse, and as an integral part of home life during that period (Stockholm University, May 3, 2024). The study of Boliden is part of her research.
